Should I get my child a tutor?
A study by Benjamin Bloom in 1984 showed that 1-on-1 tutoring led to students performing two standard deviations better than students who only learned through traditional classroom instruction. This means that students who received tutoring outperformed 98% of other students in the traditional classroom setting. ​
Advantages of Tutoring:
​Improve Grades: Tutoring enables students to ask questions about concepts that they do not fully understand and see how the tutor solves a number of different examples and ask for clarification if needed rather than just seeing one or two examples in the classroom and moving on. This helps students to understand concepts better and be able to apply their knowledge on tests and quizzes which leads to better grades.

Boost Confidence: When students understand concepts better, they feel more confident in their own abilities to perform well on test and know how to solve questions. Students who are tutored can also often help their friends and classmates at school since they have a better understanding of it from their tutoring sessions.

Improve Study Habits: During tutoring sessions, there is a distraction free environment that enables students to focus on learning and doing their homework which creates good habits. Having no phones or distractions during sessions, just focused work time, helps students to concentrate on learning concepts fully rather than being interrupted or getting distracted.

Students Often Feel More Comfortable Asking Questions: In a 1-on-1 setting, like our tutoring sessions, students often feel more comfortable asking me a question than asking their teacher in front of the whole class. This leads to students getting a better understanding of concepts and being able to apply these concepts to homework questions or on tests.

Students Enjoy Learning More: When students are in an environment where they feel comfortable and learn better, the stigma of maths being too hard fades away and learning mathematical concepts becomes more enjoyable. I also make fun challenges for students to engage in while learning.

Students Can Learn at Their Own Pace: Students often see classroom teaching to be too fast. During our tutoring sessions, students can take the time needed to learn a concept in depth and not feel rushed when learning. Alternatively, if a student feels very confident with everything that they are learning, I can start to teach them concepts in more advanced grades at a pace that suits each student's individual abilities.

Less Time Pressure: Sessions and concepts are not rushed, as classroom lessons sometimes are to fit the lesson into the school maths period before the bell rings. Students have time to ask questions and focus on a topic that they need to spend more time on to understand fully, which is not always possible to do in the classroom.
Build Strong Foundations: Many concepts are built upon in later grades and when a student does not fully grasp a concept in class, they often struggle with it again next year. Tutoring allows students to understand concepts better and be able to build upon them in later grades rather than continuing to struggle with them year after year. ​
Advantages of Online Tutoring
Flexibility: Tutoring sessions can take place from anywhere, as long as you have access to a computer or tablet and a reliable connection to Wi-Fi. Sessions can also be held outside of regular business hours to accommodate your schedule and take into account the hours that your child is in school.

Cost-Effective: Holding tutoring sessions online saves on the cost of renting a physical location to hold tutoring sessions and on transportation costs to get to a location.

Convenience/Comfortable Learning Environment: Sessions take place in the comfort of your own home. Alternatively, they can also occur wherever your child can access a computer. There is no need to drive to meet up with me for sessions, simply login to our personalized online tutoring space.

Personalized: Sessions are 1-on-1 and I tailor each session to help your child in the best way that I can. I work on the student's homework with them or review concepts that they have been working on or struggling with. There are no distractions in the session while we learn and work.

Fewer Geographical Barriers: Online sessions allow me to be able to tutor anyone, anywhere. The only limitation on this may be time zones.

Technology-Enhanced Lessons: Tutoring sessions take place on Lessonspace, a platform that has many useful tools to aid students in learning. This allows me to use the technology within Lessonspace to enhance my lessons, such as inserting graphs or shapes, and drawing on diagrams to explain concepts better. ​​
